Around 200 B.C., the Parisii Celtic tribe lived on the Île de la Cité until the Romans took over and built a town called Lutetia in 52 B.C. The area grew and became the capital of the Frankish empire in 508, when it was renamed Cité. The island was a fortified city that faced many attacks from the Normans. During the Middle Ages, it had a large population and became an important military, cultural, and spiritual center in France.

How to reach there?

To reach the starting point, take Line 1 to the Louvre-Rivoli metro station and exit (there’s only one exit). At the top of the stairs, don’t cross the street. Look for the large building that spans the entire block and is set back from the street — that's the Louvre. Walk with the Louvre on your right until you reach the Seine. Then, take a right and walk along the river to the first bridge. The Pont des Arts is the only pedestrian bridge in the area, so you can’t miss it.
