Overview

Join this immersive walking tour through Trastevere, a charming neighborhood just beyond the Tiber River, known for its distinct medieval character and lively spirit. You will uncover Trastevere's artistic heritage, historic churches, and hidden squares, all while enjoying local cuisine at family-owned spots. Led by a knowledgeable guide, this tour captures Trastevere’s unique beauty, art, and everyday life.

Itinerary

Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it has become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is considered the 'heart' of Rome. It is famous for its 'bohemian' atmosphere, restaurants and wine bars, boutiques, and craft shops.
Discover the secluded alleyways, magnificent churches, medieval architecture, and hidden beauties of Trastevere, Rome’s most picturesque neighborhood. Unlike the rest of Rome, most of Trastevere was untouched by the baroque building boom, meaning it maintains the appearance of a small medieval Italian village, despite being located in the heart of a vibrant capital city.  As you stroll Trastevere’s maze of cobblestone streets, ducking under arches dripping with vines and admiring buildings that have not changed in centuries, it is easy to imagine you have stepped back in time. You will see all the important sites in this colorful neighborhood.
Explore the lively spirit of a modern city blends with the charm of an ancient Italian village. That’s Trastevere, a unique neighborhood in Rome whose name means "beyond the Tiber" river. Here, you will find a mix of artists, students, expats, and working families, creating an atmosphere unlike any other part of the city. On this tour, you will stroll from Piazza Trilussa to Piazza in Piscinula through Trastevere's ivy-lined streets, surrounded by medieval buildings and churches that seem untouched by time. Along the way, we will explore Trastevere’s hidden artistic gems and historic landmarks, like the stunning Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere and the quaint Fontana della Botte.
You will come across family-run shops and authentic restaurants, from Ristorante da Gildo’s traditional pastas to the delightful cookies at Biscottificio Artigiano Innocenti. You will step inside beautiful old churches like Chiesa di Santa Maria della Scala and Cortile Santa Cecilia, and even visit the spot where St. Francis of Assisi once stayed in 1209 at Chiesa di San Francesco a Ripa. You will learn how to recognize medieval architecture and find the best places to eat, all while wandering through charming squares like Piazza Cercanti, Piazza Mastai, and Piazza di San Calisto. Do not miss the city’s oldest pharmacy, Antica Farmacia S Maria della Scala, or the tiny, well-preserved San Benedetto in Piscinula.
This journey will give you a glimpse into the neighborhood's beautiful churches, ancient squares, and cozy spots where locals gather. Along the way, you will get to admire art from masters like Bernini and Cavallini and enjoy coffee at a local favorite café, popular with Trastevere’s young crowd. Whether you are here for the art, history, or a taste of true Roman cuisine, this walking tour offers a perfect mix of it all.
