It has great historical and cultural significance and serves as a gathering place for social events and political demonstrations. As the oldest public square in Buenos Aires, Plaza de Mayo has witnessed many key moments in the city's history, starting from the city's second founding in 1580, through the independence revolution, and continuing to modern political protests. Visit the Cathedral of Buenos Aires. Jorge Bergoglio was the archbishop here until 2013, when he became Pope Francis. This cathedral is also a national historical site. It has the mausoleum of General José de San Martín, who is Argentina's most respected hero. He led the country to independence in 1816.
