Overview

Explore the rich history of Rome’s ancient Jewish community in the historic Roman Ghetto. This community is one of the oldest Jewish groups in Europe. The Roman Jewish Ghetto stands as a living testament to over 2,000 years of Jewish heritage in Rome. From ancient times to the Ghetto's confinement era, through the Holocaust, and into today’s vibrant community, walking these historic streets brings the enduring story of Roman Jews to life with every step.

Itinerary

Dating back to 1555, the 7-acre Roman Jewish Ghetto was home to more than 4,700 Jews ordered to live in a district isolated from the Christians for nearly 300 years. In 1848 when Italy became a republic, the walls of Jewish Ghetto Rome were demolished.  Our English-speaking guide takes you through pedestrian walkways and along historic buildings, as you learn about the Jewish Ghetto’s past. Come see street artisans, narrow cobbled lanes, medieval towers built over Roman ruins, and breathtaking views of the Tiber River – enjoy all these sites, sounds, and flavors of the city on this single tour.

In a city rich with history, the Roman Jewish Ghetto truly stands out. Rome has Europe’s oldest Jewish community, with Jewish people living here for over 2,000 years. From 1555 to 1870, the Jewish community was forced to live in a closed area with walls near the Tiber River. Even after the walls were removed, this Ghetto area stayed at the heart of Jewish life in Rome. As you walk through its narrow streets, touch its ancient stones, and visit traditional shops and restaurants, you can feel the long history of the Jewish community here. Their story includes many hardships, like the Holocaust, but also incredible strength and pride in their heritage. Learning about Roman Jews in books is one way, but on this tour, you will get to see, feel, and even taste their history for yourself.

Discover the beauty, mystery, and history of the world’s oldest Jewish Ghetto and find the hidden treasures of Rome that most tourists never see. This tour will lead us to the magnificent Synagogue, a testimony to the enduring presence of Rome’s Jewish community. We will meander through the historic Portico d’Ottavia soaking in the rich tapestry of history woven into these ancient streets. The guides are at your exclusive disposal and will take you on a private tour through Rome, its history, anecdotes and curiosities, making your tour interesting, exciting, and one-of-a-kind.
