Heraklion, commonly known as Iraklio, is the capital city of the Greek island of Crete. It is famous for the Palace of Knossos, which is located just outside the city. The massive archaeological monument, which contains frescoes and baths, goes back thousands of years to the Minoan culture. The 16th-century Koules fortification guards the city's Venetian harbour. The Minoan art collection at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum is extensive.
