Overview

The Olympus-Dion + Thessaloniki tour commences with a fun-filled and exciting trip to the Archaeological Park at Dion. The Dion Archaeological Park situated at the foothills of Mount Olympus was one of the most consecrated and revered sites in ancient Greece. King Philip II of Macedonia and his illustrious successor, Alexander the Great offered prayers to the 12 Olympians in the Greek pantheon before and after a military crusade. You’ll not have to pay any entrance fee for touring the archaeological site typified with dilapidated sacred sites, ancient city walls, and public baths. Take your time admiring a Macedonian sanctuary that has been consecrated to the Greek god Zeus. After you’ve had your fill of the Dion archaeological park, you’ll ascend to the peak of Mount Olympus to take a bird’s eye view of the relics and the adjoining national park.

Itinerary

The hop-on hop-off coach with an open-top operates from 8:30 AM. This double-decker bus will head straightaway to the archaeological museum and park at Dion, located at Mount Olympus’s foothills. Mount Olympus is the highest mountain peak in Greece that is steeped in history and regarded as extremely sacred.

Home to the Olympian deities, this is the mountain associated with one of the world’s greatest emperors, Alexander and his father King Philip II. Both the Macedonian kings paid their obeisance to the 12 Olympians at this mountain before embarking on a military campaign. The holy mountain peak also served as the venue for celebrations after the emperors returned victorious from a martial campaign.

Spend up to an hour at the archaeological site and the adjacent museum at Dion for a thorough exploration. Once you’re through with touring this historical site, you can take a coffee- or a lunch break if you wish. Thereafter the hop-on hop-off tour bus will leave at the base of Mount Olympus from where you’ll climb almost 3km to reach the peak. Once you’re at the summit, you’ll take pleasure in soaking in awesome panoramas of the surrounding national park from the Stavros viewpoint.

You’ll walk around the breathtaking Enipeas Gorge- Greece’s first national park for about half an hour with Mount Olympus in the background.  You’ll be simply left wonderstruck at the natural beauty of the park’s environs dotted with attractive timber b bridges, luxuriant riverbanks, and sparkling pools. The national park also teems with wildlife including but not limited to jackals, deer, wolves, wild boars, lynx, and brown bears.

The tour continues with a visit to Old Panteleimon, an old pictorial village whose existence dates back to the 14th cent. The last stopover of the Thessaloniki Olympus-Dion tour will be at Litochoro- another picturesque hamlet.
